Female Hair Loss Treatments - Two That Can Work!

By Rosemary Braithwaite

Female hair loss treatment differs to that of men as most female hair loss is attributable to a number of factors that are not necessarily genetic.

A considerable amount of women suffer from hair loss from hormonal imbalances which can be caused by menopause, stopping the contraceptive pill, other medications and more commonly stress.

The most common form of female hair loss is known as alopecia areata and is typically bald patches appearing on the scalp. There is usually more than one and they can be incredibly difficult to cure.

For example what you may not realize is that in the case of coming off the contraceptive pill there is a 3 month period delay as the estrogen gradually ebbs from the metabolism. Quite often the body over compensates for this withdrawal, especially where contraception has been taken for a number of years and then all of a sudden your hair either starts to noticeably thin or fall out.

If you have noticed this pattern, especially having come off the pill, then this could be happening to you. What this means is that it is going to take a minimum of 3 months for your hair to regrow to the level it was and it will do this naturally. The intermediate period between the 3 month recovery period will entirely depend on your metabolism as every person is different and the time period before regrowth is noticeable could be from 4 months to a year!

If hair loss is due to menopause then the best thing, if you suspect this is to consult your doctor first just in case there may be some other underlying cause. More often than not if you can be put on a course of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) this may help get the hair to regenerate but alas as all forms of medication can do you may end up suffering from other side effects and that is why HRT is not suitable for everyone.

If that is the case then there are some other hair loss treatments that are available for women. Amongst the two most popular are Propecia and Minoxidil. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Minoxidil has to be applied to the scalp 2 times a day. It's very effective but when there are some side effects (which are rare) then as with all treatments it should be stopped.

Propecia is becoming much more common but must be obtained by subscription as it is a very powerful drug. It is most used where the hair loss is severe and there are more cases of reported side effects. However it is still a very effective treatment.

Most female hair loss treatments are useless but there are some that have stood the test of time. Two of which are listed above.
